Rod Poepping

My name is Rod and I am the Lead Pastor of ACF Church. I moved to Alaska in October of 2007 with my wife Diane and our two children Michael and Lucy. Diane and I met and married in the Snoqualmie Valley in Washington State.

I was a Commercial electrician for 20 years before deciding to abandon that career for becoming a pastor. I have a deep affinity for seeing Jesus Christ heal people and watch them walk in wholeness and health. I find healing to be so crucial as I am a sober alcoholic. I spent many years drinking but have enjoyed the last 18 years of sobriety more than I could have ever imagined. I have a particular draw towards trivial knowledge and I enjoy fishing, hiking and running 1/2-marathons.

It is a great joy to serve alongside the people of ACF Church as we search to discover what God has planned for each of us as individuals and as a body. I firmly believe in striving to make our community a better place because of the presence of the church.

This is a great Topic that I’m sure will be viewed with many differing opinions and many different experiences. I’m not sure my insight is the perfect one but I believe it has helped our church in the area of marriage.

First a caveat: I have a few guiding principles that I try and live by that have helped me survive in Ministry. As the discussion of marriage and ministry comes up I think it...

As I look at my sobriety and I realize its a daily choice. I’m reminded of the fact that its not about the big decisions but about all the small decisions that lead to the big decision. If sobriety is about a daily choice then what are all those things I choose on a daily basis that lead to choosing sobriety. Here is a list for me:

 Today I choose:

To Forgive Others for the small things

To...

I have heard this statement or statements referring to this sentiment many times. Let me give you a few reasons this is not true for me and in fact I believe the opposite is true.

  1. The darker it gets the brighter the light shines:

Although Porn seems to be everywhere and we are living in a sexually charged time the likes of which we have never seen. The opportunity for us to make a difference...

There is so much more to this question than just a cut and dry answer. I think when Pastors are approached with this question its easier to answer on the spot than in a blog. Answering this question takes having some background and some more information than just saying Yes or No. Lets look at some questions I have been asked through the years.

Is Masturbation OK if we are married...

Matthew 7:13-14
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Although Jesus was not talking here about a life of purity This feels like my journey many days. As pastors we are called to live a life of purity but...

During this month we are revisiting some of our most viewed blogs in the pastors section. We would love to see your comments on how you felt about them, what was your response, and how you felt.

"Struggelign Pastor Should I Quit?"

This is such a tough question and if you find yourself asking this question I imagine you’ve been struggling with pornography for awhile. The question that is really...

Accountability is good. How many times have you heard a pastor say these things:

Get accountable, Get into groups where you can be accountable, Integrity starts with accountability, and True health start with accountability. We love this and cheer it on but the process of holding someone accountable now that’s a different story.

Most people shy away from this for a few different reasons. First...

Six Gauges

The 6 Gauges on the dashboard of ministry.

As we approach the issue of having someone struggling with porn how do we deal with it. First of all I think this isn't a cut and dry answer that can really be perfectly addressed in this blog. I believe prayer, discernment, and grace need to be used well and with abundance as you walk into this situation. Every situation will be different but here...

This is such a tough question and if you find yourself asking this question I imagine you’ve been struggling with pornography for awhile. The question that is really being asked is how much sin is to much sin. I believe we all would answer that with a resounding “any sin is to much sin” Hebrews 10:14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. While that may...

As a pastor who has seen people struggle with this for years it can be disheartening. Becoming desensitized to porn and unhealthy images is difficult enough but with our culture walking down this road makes it even harder. As someone who has struggled and worked hard to break free of porn I believe Jesus has reset my dial. I have been able to feel less and less like porn is a normal part of...
