When I first started writing “Look Up” I didn’t know what the exact lyrics would be or how it would sound, but I did know without a doubt that I wanted to bring glory to God and spread awareness about XXXChurch.com and its awesome ministry. My vision was to create music with a purpose, and I am excited for the opportunity to share my love for Jesus and this ministry through my music.
I am thankful to say that I am a recovering porn addict, and that I am no longer bound by lust. My struggle began in 8th grade. It was overwhelming and shameful to me, and I constantly felt the weight of my secretive lifestyle. It was frustrating to want to break free, while feeling totally powerless over my addiction. No matter how hard I tried on my own to diminish the urges they always crept back. I was disappointed in myself and my choices.
In 2011 my now father-in-law began racing as a XXXChurch team member in various triathlons and running events. Their goals were to raise money and awareness about the porn industry, addictions, and how XXXChurch is helping people get healed. I heard all about the ministry and did some investigation about the resources available to me. It was then that I felt hope for the first time. I confessed to Kelly (my girlfriend at the time but now my wife) about the struggles that I was facing and the private life I was living. I could not have asked for a better response from her; she was encouraging, optimistic and supportive. We agreed that I would sign up for X3watch and get some accountability.
I felt supported, but most of all I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was filled with new found honesty and openness about my struggles (Tweet This!). I no longer felt burdened by my sin and I did not feel controlled by my temptations. I am so thankful to God, my wife, and to XXXChurch for providing the resources that have changed my life.
I was inspired to write this song one afternoon as I lay outside in the sun reflecting on the new person that I had become. As I looked up I felt immense gratitude to God for giving me strength to overcome the hardest battle I’ve ever faced, and for his grace and mercy. The lyrics just started flowing out of my head and over the last year it has developed into my first single. My prayer for all those who hear this song, is that they will remember to look up to the One who can truly save us against anything we face.
