The demise of guys?

by Tim Savage

Guys ask the question, “What am I actually looking at?” when it comes to porn. That can be a simple answer or a bit of an intricate one. It seems to not be as simple as images that show up on a screen or a page that release endorphins, rather an overall culture shift for guys in general.

The question is summarized in a number of points in Philip Zimbardo’s TED talk. He goes over the intricacies of where guys are right now in our culture in a point-by-point delivery that paints a simple picture of the specific addiction of pornography.

It is amazing to see the world where our guys are not becoming men. Guys are 30 percent more likely to drop out of school, and girls outperform guys at every level from elementary school to graduate school. Two-thirds of all special education students are guys, and guys are five times more likely than girls to have ADHD.

To make matters worse heading into their adult years, guys spend 10,000 hours gaming by age 21 where most of these hours are in isolation. This detachment from relationships having a false understanding intimacy leads to guys that also watch pron to not having an understanding between making love and watching porn.

Also, the porn industry has overtaken the entertainment industry — where there are 400 movies made in Hollywood, there are 11,000 porn videos being made.

Are guys are being rewired for isolation with internal relationships and instant gratification?
