Seven years into being a part of this ministry, I must say that there’s not much that surprises me when it comes to porn. But there are occasions when I’ll find myself reading something that has me saying “Wait…what?” simply because although we tend to talk about the sexual dysfunction of porn and the lust dangers in porn and the isolation that creeps in due to porn, I’m not sure if we talk nearly enough about how selfish, how freakin’ selfish, it is.

Yet sometimes, we all need the reminder that porn doesn’t care about us. Not one bit.

What prompted me to remember this was when I read the news about a lot of the porn production side of the industry making plans to relocate to Las Vegas, simply because of the California condom law. Apparently, ever since the law went into effect, porn permits in LA have dropped close to 95 percent.

They don’t want to be required to wear condoms. It’s just that simple.

Even though condoms help to protect people from diseases. Interesting.

I mean, from a fantasy perspective, I get it. No one gets STDs in soaps, whether they wear a condom or not, and so to talk about them would jack up the romanticism of it all (yeah, look up the definitions of romance when you get a chance; that might be a good thing). And on the heels of that, no one wants to think about someone needing a condom in porn, either. It messes up the visuals. It reminds us that we shouldn’t treat sex casually, because when we do, there are consequences. Sometimes dire ones

Yet, it’s a jarring reality check that when we’re watching porn, we don’t want to focus on prophylactics. Even though it’s what helps to keep people from getting sick. Even though in 2013, the porn industry received quite a few reality checks that STDs are still infecting people when they received the news of several actors and actresses contracting HIV.

And what does the porn industry do in response? It shuts down production, temporarily. (Good.)

And it moves to where condoms aren’t required (at least not yet). OK, is it just me or does it seem like someone missed the point?

And that is proof that porn is extremely (EXTREMELY) selfish. It doesn’t care anything about you or me. Or even the people who have made it what it is. (Whatever that is.)

So the next time you decide to get on the internet to hit up one of your favorite porn sites, I encourage you to think about something first: What you are using for your own amusement, release or “void filler” has put people’s lives at risk. And the very person you’re watching could be the next HIV casualty.

Oh, and at the end of the day, porn really couldn’t care less.

Hmph. If that doesn’t cause you to feel at least a little sick to your stomach, I honestly don’t know what will.
